PFI application for new Well Being Centre in Holt Park

Local Councillors back plans for new leisure centre and social care facility

Leeds City Council's Executive Board agreed on Wednesday to back an application to the Department of Health for up to £30M PFI (Private Finance Initiative) credits to replace Holt Park Leisure Centre with a Well Being Centre. The proposal for the New Leaf Well Being Centre would combine a new leisure centre, incorporating a main pool, learner pool with beach, hydrotherapy pool, bodyline gym and 4-court sports hall with multipurpose rooms, which could be used for exercise classes, community meeting rooms, physiotherapy or consultations etc. A sensory room and rebound room (including a trampoline set into the floor) could also be included, as these could be used both for children's parties and rehabilitation. The facilities would be accessible for all, with particular provision for people with physical and learning disabilities.

The project is being developed with long-term flexibility in mind, incorporating facilities which can be used by the community as a whole for a variety of uses. Adults with social care needs will have prioritised access to facilities which are particularly relevant to their needs, such as hydrotherapy or a sensory room, as well as being able to access the wider range of amenities and activities on offer, whilst benefiting from the appropriate level of support.

Councillor Ben Chastney (Lib Dem, Weetwood) commented:

"This new centre would be very beneficial for the local area, including residents of Weetwood ward, as it would greatly contribute to health and well being and provide much needed resources for those people with special educational or physical needs."

Councillor Judith Chapman (Lib Dem, Weetwood) added:

"As well as being a fantastic, modern facility for local residents, this new centre would also encourage the long anticipated regeneration of Holt Park district centre. People have really got behind this proposal and public consultation events have led to very positive support for the project from local residents, community groups and organisations such as the PCT alike."
