Action urged on Woodhouse Moor

Local councillors call for action to protect the much loved park throughout the coming summer months.
Following recent days of fine weather local Liberal Democrat councillors have grown increasingly concerned for the state that Woodhouse Moor, commonly known as Hyde Park, is being left in after daytime and weekend visits.
It is widely acknowledged that the Moor provides much needed (and well appreciated) open space for many nearby residents, who often live in back-to-back properties with no gardens. What has become distressing however, is the condition the park is left in at the end of the weekend when visitors leave.
Leeds City Council has long provided skips, refuse sacks and litter bins in order for visitors to leave their waste, but it would seem like increasing numbers of visitors are taking little regard for the fragile environment they so clearly enjoy.
Recent visits from council officers and the police have highlighted the levels of anti-social behaviour and littering that takes place. Liberal Democrat councillors now believe stronger action must be taken to ensure everybody can enjoy a visit to the park.
Newly elected Cllr Jamie Matthews (Lib Dem, Headingley), at 23 the youngest councillor on Leeds City Council, says:
"We all appreciate that the park is well used and enjoyed especially in good weather. However this does not excuse damage and anti-social behaviour.
"We met with the police immediately after the weekend and are pleased they have agreed to take a much more pro-active approach and will in future have a presence when the park is busy."
Cllr Penny Ewens (Lib Dem, Hyde Park and Woodhouse) added:
"We are determined to see action on this issue and to ensure that the park continues to be enjoyed by the whole community."
