Council presses forward with housing plans

Councillors are set to discuss plans that pave the way for 27 new council houses to be built in Leeds.

A report set to go before the council's executive board outlines the plans and actions necessary for 77 new houses to be built in Leeds, with the council owning a number that can be let out to council tenants.

The three sites of the new houses; Waterloo Primary School in Pudsey and Evelyn Place and Silver Royd Hill in LS12 have all been earmarked for future development. The council is seeking to sell the plots of land (some at less than market value) to secure the best possible future development for new residents.

The development may well be targeted at providing new housing for the over 55s. This will help provide better facilities for current residents and free up existing housing stock that may be of better use to groups such as families and couples.

Speaking of the report Cllr Richard Brett (Lib Dem, Burmantoft and Richmond Hill) Deputy Leader of Council said:

"I am pleased that following the announcements we made last year, renewing our commitment to build new council houses in Leeds, that this report is coming before the executive board.

It marks the first step in this administration's plan to radically change the housing landscape of Leeds, building new, high quality and affordable council housing.

It is imperative that as a council we do all we can to ensure that all residents of Leeds have suitable accommodation. I am pleased that we are making progress in this area and I look forward to announcing many more schemes like this in the future."
