Otley Liberal Democrat councillors Graham Kirkland and Colin Campbell held a meeting this week with Cllr Richard Brett (Lib Dem, Burmantofts and Richmond Hill) Deputy Leader of Leeds City Council and Executive Member for Finance to brief him on the on going problems of Heavy Goods Vehicles in Otley.
Councillor Campbell said:
"We felt it was important to ensure Cllr Brett understood the problems and concerns of local residents. We had a detailed discussion on the history of the problem and how it effects the town. We also urged him to use his influence to help progress the proposed lorry ban for the north of Otley,"
Cllr Kirkland added:
"Our view has always been that the ban should be on the A59 at Blubberhouses, this would prevent the HGV's using narrow country roads and travelling through the middle of Otley. North Yorkshire Council have always refused to support this and despite long negotiations to find a compromise have refused to do anything to relieve the problem. We believe that action must now be taken to sort this out the problem of lorries from quarries in North Yorkshire and we have asked for the ban to be progressed. Cllr Brett was sympathetic to the problem and has agreed to look into this with a view to the matter coming to the Council Executive Board for a decision in the next couple of months."
