Design statement launch to shape development in north-west Leeds

September 10, 2007 7:26 PM

Residents and local groups in Headingley and Hyde Park are being asked for their input into a project to decide the future development of their areas.

The launch of the Headingley and Hyde Park Neighbourhood Design Statement Project will be taking place on Saturday 15th September in the hall at Headingley St Columba's United Reformed Church on Headingley Lane.

Liberal Democrat Councillors Martin Hamilton and Penny Ewens are both members of the Inner North West Area Committee, which is contributing £5,000 towards the project. Both councillors welcomed the launch of the design statement.

Cllr Martin Hamilton (Lib Dem, Headingley) said:

"The design statement will help us decide how we make our neighbourhood distinctive. It will help us encourage new development that both enhances and complements what is already there.

"This is a tribute to the hard work of the Headingley Development Trust and North Hyde Park Neighbourhood Association in getting the project off the ground. This is quite clearly a very important project for the area so as a member of the area committee, I am very glad to be funding it."

Cllr Penny Ewens (Lib Dem, Hyde Park and Woodhouse) said:

"This is an opportunity for local people to shape the development of the Headingley and Hyde Park areas for years to come.

"These areas currently face a lot of pressures, be it from the demand for student accommodation or from the endless torrent of applications for late night takeaways and booze spots.

"For the project to be a success, we need as many local groups as possible to get involved so I would urge anybody interested to come to the launch on Saturday."
