Fitness initiative aims to tackle anti-social behaviour and obesity in north west Leeds

August 14, 2007 3:12 PM

The North West Inner Area Committee has agreed to support a new fitness initiative that aims to tackle both unhealthy living and anti-social behaviour with a £5k grant.

The World of Fitness group will offer an innovative Life Skills programme to residents in north west Leeds, specifically vulnerable young people.

The scheme will be based in a Burley gym but a number of mobile instructors will go out into the community and deliver the service in various satellite premises.

Local Councillor Kabeer Hussain has welcomed the scheme.

Councillor Kabeer Hussain (Lib Dem, Hyde Park & Woodhouse) said, "Having looked at the business plan for the World of Fitness I have to say I'm fully behind what they are trying to achieve.

"There is a strong link between an unhealthy lifestyle and anti-social behaviour. Whether it be the mis-use of alcohol and drugs, boredom from a sedentary lifestyle or a lack of self-esteem; being unhealthy can lead to wider problems.

"The great thing about the World of Fitness scheme is that it is so inclusive. It aims to give people of all ages a chance to participate in something that will improve their lives in a safe, secure and fun environment. Credit has to go to Directors Martin and Anne Bateson, for putting something back."
