5000 bulbs planted in East End Park

November 13, 2006 12:58 PM

Fifty children from three East Leeds Primary schools have helped plant 5000 bulbs in East End Park. Following a request for help from Burmantofts & Richmond Hill Councillor Richard Brett, green fingered pupils from Mount St Mary's Primary, Richmond Hill Primary and Victoria Primary volunteered to lend a hand.

Councillor Richard Brett (Lib Dem, Burmantofts & Richmond Hill) one of the founding members of the Friends of East End Park said, "The location for the bulbs was specifically chosen at the junction near Park Parade and Ivy Street so that the many car drivers and other passers-by will spot the added colour next spring. The planting proved to be a real success and the extra help from the school children was a real bonus, we couldn't have done it without them. East End Park is really beginning to take shape now and become an asset that the whole community can enjoy and be proud of."

Notes:

1. The Parks Department prepared the ground for the event and provided the trowels, with Park Ranger Steve Joul showing the youngsters what to do.

2. The Friends of East End Park provided the funds for the bulbs and got involved with the planting themselves.

3. Councillor David Hollingsworth along with two local Neighbourhood wardens also planted dozens of bulbs.

4. The Friends of East End Park is a community group based in East Leeds. The Friends of East End Park formed with the specific aim of improving the park's lacklustre appearance.

5. Last year the council approved ?75k worth of funding for the park after canvassing local residents at a meeting organised and attended by the Friends of East End Park. The money has been spent on :-

 Putting "A frame" barriers at each entrance to stop motor cyclists getting on to the Park.

 Adding about 10 vandal proof metal park benches

 Adding about a dozen new litter bins

 Planting 5000 daffodil bulbs along a stretch near East Park Parade

 Putting a "teen zone" hut near the basketball pitch

 Erecting new metal perimeter railings from Ings Crescent to Victoria Avenue.

 Re - siting and improving the two football pitches.
