The news from coming out of Pakistan that Leeds man Mirza Tahir Hussain has had his death sentence commuted to a life sentence has been welcomed by the Leader of Leeds City Council and local ward Councillors. Mirza's local councillor Kabeer Hussain has campaigned tirelessly for his release, and Leader of Council Mark Harris appeared on Pakistani TV in a personal appeal to President Musharraf for the release of Mirza.
Cllr Hussain (Lib Dem, Hyde Park and Woodhouse) said "This is tremendous news. It appears that the government of Pakistan has made the right decision and commuted his sentence to life. They deserve praise for responding positively to the many appeals for clemency. Hopefully we'll see Mirza back home in Leeds in the very near future".
Leader of Leeds City Council, Cllr Mark Harris said "The whole city of Leeds welcomes the news that the calls for compassion have been heeded. I'm delighted for Mirza, and for his family who have worked so hard to help secure his release."
