Following a walkabout by local councillor James Monaghan and council enforcement officers, 59 properties in Headingley have been issued with a warning to clear rubbish from their gardens or face the prospect of legal action.
Focusing on an area of streets known collectively as the Manor's and Richmond's, the walkabout highlighted the need for tenants and landlords to take greater responsibility for their properties appearance.
Councillor James Monaghan (Lib Dem, Headingley) said, "During the walkabout it became very apparent that despite the best efforts of the council's Streetscene programme, we are still finding a significant number of tenants and landlords not taking adequate care of their gardens. Many gardens still contain waste dumped by students leaving the city in July or rubble from building improvements that have not been removed by landlords .We must ask for the cooperation of tenants and landlords if we are to keep the area tidy. The benefits of a clean environment are huge; I would urge anyone who has dumped waste in their garden to contact the council who will get their landlord to remove it."
