At Wednesday's Full Council meeting, Leeds City Councillor Colin Campbell took the opportunity of a debate on NHS car parking charges to highlight the position at the Wharfedale Hospital, Otley.
Councillor Colin Campbell (Lib Dem, Otley & Yeadon) said, "The introduction of carparking charges at Otley have been a disaster for hospital employees, patients and local residents. Hospital workers have had to pay to go to work, patients have had to pay to go for treatment and residents have had to pay because cars are now parked on residential streets to avoid charges.
Councillor Campbell added, "There are plenty of parking spaces on the Otley site so there is no need to use charging to restrict use, the only reason for the charges is so that the NHS can raise extra revenue. The hospital should follow the advice of the recent parliamentary committee report and drop charges altogether. This would give poorly people and their relatives one less thing to worry about."
