Six Figure investment set for East Leeds

August 3, 2006 7:53 PM

Leeds City Council is set to invest close to £300k into traffic improvement measures on the Cross Green Industrial Estate in East Leeds. Money will be used to improve the busy junction of Cross Green Approach and Knowsthorpe Lane. The proposed scheme will calm traffic and ease movement, particularly for HGV's. Pedestrians are also set to benefit as parking bays will be introduced along the two roads, removing the need for parking on the adjoining footpaths. Local Councillor Richard Brett has welcomed the investment and talked of how an improved transport network will help regenerate the area.

Councillor Richard Brett (Lib Dem, Burmantofts & Richmond Hill) said, "Whilst traffic improvements may seem trivial to some they play a vital part in making the working lives of local businesses a lot easier. By making the Aire Valley a better place for business we are encouraging investment that will have a knock on for the local economy in terms of job creation and regeneration."

Notes:

1. The scheme forms part of the wider Aire Valley regeneration scheme.

2. The scheme costs £282,172 and is to be fully funded by SRB (Single Regeneration Budget) funding.

3. Details of scheme include:-

• Widening of the junction of Knowsthorpe Lane/Cross Green Approach

• Construction of a mini-roundabout at the above junction

• Relocation of utilities

• Carriageway realignment

• Carriageway resurfacing

• Re-siting of street lights

• Construction of parking bays to reduce parking on footpaths

• Traffic Regulation Orders to support physical improvements/restrictions

4. Subject to all funding and other relevant approvals, the scheme is anticipated to start in the Autumn, with a 6-8 week construction period.

5. The latest figures show that the Burmantofts & Richmond Hill ward has the highest number of benefits claimants in any ward in the city at 8.5%(Source: Leeds Economy Bulletin, June 2006)
