Leeds City Council has recently undertaken two green-fingered repair projects in the centre of Headingley. Located at the heart of LS6, the council have replanted a beech tree on Otley Road and are in the process of landscaping a greenspace on North Lane, known locally as the Rose Garden. Giving some history behind the need for the repairs, local councillor James Monaghan has stressed that the council will not sit back and allow local businesses to mistreat Headingley's greenspaces.
Councillor James Monaghan (Lib Dem, Headingley) said "In the case of the beech tree opposite Headingley Dental Practice, the council has replanted a tree that was illegally chopped down several years ago. Being in such a prominent position close to the crossroads, it was a travesty that this was ever allowed to happen.
Councillor Monaghan added "As for the Rose Garden, the path that lead up from North Lane to the Arc should never have been there in the first place. Builders had used the Rose Garden as a short cut when the Arc was getting a refurbishment and the path somehow got made permanent. My ward colleagues and I have pushed to get this removed and once again the council has acted. The area affected by the path has already been re-turfed and the damaged hedgerow will be re-planted as soon as the materials become available."
