Grass Cutting Statement

June 21, 2006 11:28 PM

At today's meeting of full council, Cllr Steve Smith, executive member for city services clarified the position on grass cutting.

In his speech to fellow councillors he admitted that the standard of service provided by the current contractor was not up to scratch but pointed out the improvements that had been made and highlighted the actions being taken to put things right.

Cllr Smith said:

"We have a contractor who we are paying to do the job of cutting the grass and they are clearly not doing it to a satisfactory standard. Things need to improve and we are taking action to ensure they do.

"An additional contractor has been hired to cut some of the problem areas and ensure things don't get further out of hand.

"Value for money for Leeds taxpayers is as always foremost in our concerns and financial penalties can be incurred against the contractor when they don't provide the service required of them.

"We shouldn't forget that things have improved since last year. Bear in mind that this time last year the contractor had only just completed the first cut of the grass. Now we are already on our sixth cut of the year.
