The 49 bus route, which runs from Bramley to Seacroft, is poised for a £300k revamp. The six figure project will ensure that all stops are made compatible with the service's low floor buses and that dropped crossing points are installed were accessibility is limited. Providing there is no objections in the area's affected by the scheme, work should be underway by July. Local Councillors, Kabeer Hussain, Javaid Akhtar and Richard Brett have expressed their delight at the plans.
Councillor Kabeer Hussain (Lib Dem, Hyde Park & Woodhouse) said, "News that the 49 bus route is to get a major make-over is very welcome. The route serves a busy stretch of Cardigan Road and provides a vital service to St James Hospital and the shopping centre in Kirkstall."
Councillor Javaid Akhtar (Lib Dem, Gipton & Harehills) "This is a really positive investment by the Council. By making the stops more user friendly the Council are making the service more accessible to those people, like the elderly and infirm, who really rely on it."
Councillor Richard Brett (Lib Dem, Burmantofts & Richmond Hill) commented "Hopefully such significant improvements to the 49 route will encourage more passengers to use the service, helping alleviate the back log of traffic that is all too familiar in East Leeds."
Notes:
1. The total cost of the scheme is £317,200. Funding comes from Leeds City Council's Integrated Transport Scheme (part of the Council's approved Capital Programme).
