Liberal Democrat Councillor Stewart Golton, Lead Member for Development and Sustainability and Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, says that Leeds City Council is reinforcing its commitment to environmental issues such as climate change by signing up to the 'Nottingham Declaration'.
Next Wednesday's meeting of the Council's Executive Board will propose that the Leader of Council and Chief Executive sign the Declaration, which requires the Council to produce plans to address the causes and impacts of climate change within two years. This builds upon work already being done to develop and implement the Council's Climate Change Strategy, and a range of 'green' initiatives including increased recycling, enhancements to the city's green spaces and allotments, and the introduction of street lighting-efficient streetlighting.
Cllr Golton (Liberal Democrat, Rothwell) said 'The Lib Dem, Conservative and Green administration running the Council has already started the ball rolling in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Leeds. Signing the Nottingham Declaration reinforces our commitment to tackling the issue. Leeds City Council is the biggest employer in the region so we need to set an example to others. Hopefully other organisations - large and small - will also look at what they are doing to deal with the impact of climate change, and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.'
