Councillor Javaid Akhtar has been appointed the Chair of the Liberal Democrat Group on Leeds City Council.
Cllr Akhtar said "I'm very happy, and honoured, to be elected to this post by my Liberal Democrat Council colleagues. The job involves a great deal of hard work helping to organise the activities of the Council group, and I'm looking forward to a very busy year".
"I'm proud that I'm the black or Asian person, representing an inner city ward, to chair a Council Group in Leeds. Leeds has a fantastically diverse mix of cultures, languages, races, religions and lifestyles - and people from every community have an important role to play in the political life of the city."
The views in this Press Release are those of the Liberal Democrat Council Group, and not necessarily those of Leeds City Council, its Officers or of the Liberal Democrat Party.
