Council planners have given the green light for a new medical surgery and St Cyprian's Church Hall to be built in Harehills, east Leeds. The scheme, which is to be located on Bellbrooke Avenue, was finally given the go ahead after local councillors and residents threw their support behind the proposals. The project's path through the planning process has been pushed by Burmantofts and Richmond Hill Councillors David Hollingsworth, Richard Brett and Ralph Pryke.
Councillor David Hollingsworth (Lib Dem, Burmantofts & Richmond Hill) said, 'I am delighted the planners have agreed to give the scheme the go ahead. The new medical surgery and improved Church Hall will be great additions to the area.'
Councillor Ralph Pryke (Lib Dem, Burmantofts & Richmond Hill) added, 'The support for the project from local people is overwhelming. The potential for regeneration with the new medical centre in the Bellbrookes and Trafford's is an exciting prospect.'
Councillor Richard Brett (Lib Dem, Burmantofts & Richmond Hill) commented, 'The project will help tackle crime and anti-social behaviour in the Bellbrookes because more people will come to the area.'
The Reverend Councillor Alan Taylor (Lib Dem, Gipton & Harehills), chair of Inner East Area Committee said 'This new medical centre will also have a wide impact on many residents in Harehills especially those living in the near by Seaforth's, Trafford's and Strathmores. This is yet another positive step towards renovating and regenerating this area of East Leeds. It's good to see the local church working with other agencies to care for local communities in this part of the city'
The Reverend Margaret Harper (St Cyprian's Church) added, 'At St Cyprian and St James, we are delighted that the church will be able to continue to serve the community in a new hall suitable for the 21st Century. During building work, as many activities as possible will be accommodated in the church building.'
Notes to the Editors:
1. The scheme has been made possible thanks to agreement between the St Cyprians & St James Church and the East Leeds Primary Care Trust.
2. The agreement will see the current church hall being converted into a new medical surgery by the PCT. In exchange for use of the building the Church has requested that a new Church Hall be built adjacent to the old site.
3. The attached Jpeg shows the congregation of St Cyprians Church on the proposed site with Cllr Richard Brett (kneeling centre) and Reverend Margaret Harper (far left).
