Leeds City Council's Executive Board Member for Children's Services, Cllr Brian Jennings (Liberal Democrat, Weetwood) is delighted that funding has been allocated that will allow the Council to develop 23 new Children's Centres in Leeds between 2006-08 in addition to the 26 created between 2004-06. Extra funding has also been awarded that will provide additional hours of free nursery education.
Cllr Jennings (Lib Dem, Weetwood) said "This is wonderful news. The new Children's Centres will be located in some of the most deprived areas in the city. Combined with the increase in free hours it will enable more parents to consider choices about training and employment and take up opportunities that will improve life chances for themselves and their families. They should provide another means of narrowing the gap, alongside the many initiatives that the Council is putting place at the moment to regenerate some of our most disadvantaged communities. "
