Liberal Democrat Councillors in East Leeds are delighted that Leeds City Council is set to invest £280,000 to clean up the major routes into the City Centre over the next 12 months with the Easterly Road/Roundhay Road section of the A58 and the A64 through Burmantofts and Richmond Hill targeted as key stretches of road to receive extra attention. The aim is to improve the image of Leeds and the local environment for both the residents and visitors to the city. A cleaning hit squad will be out and about trimming hedges and grass verges, digging out weeds and removing every piece of litter and fly-tipped waste at the side of the road. All rubbish collected by the team will be recycled.
Cllr Alan Taylor (Lib Dem, Gipton and Harehills) said "I am delighted that Easterly Road and Roundhay Road have been chosen for special attention. It's a great example of how the ruling Liberal Democrat/Conservative/Green administration are responding to the needs of local communities across the city."
"We are lucky in this area that we already benefit from the hard work of John Winkley, the Council's litter picker on Roundhay Road. The excellent job he does should hopefully be made a little easier thanks to the extra resources we're providing".
Commenting on the work to be carried out on the A64, Cllr David Hollingsworth (Lib Dem, Burmantofts and Richmond Hill) said "This is very welcome news. It shows recognition for this area from Leeds City Council and directly deals with the concerns of local residents over the huge amount of litter dumped here by people as they drive along the A64 on their way in and out of Leeds."
"These plans are combined with a number of other measures which the ruling Liberal Democrat/Conservative/Green Alliance have put in place which directly benefit people in East Leeds over the coming months."
