Cllr Javaid Akhtar (Lib Dem, Gipton & Harehills), Lead member for Social Services on Leeds City Council, has hailed the efforts of the Hibiscus Association in providing a support network for members of the Caribbean community who are elderly or infirm, or who care for elderly or infirm relatives.
Cllr Akhtar said "The Hibiscus Association do some wonderful work in providing support for people who would otherwise be at risk of becoming isolated from the rest of the community. When you suffer from physical disability or debilitating illness, or when you spend much of your time caring for someone in that situation, you can become cut-off from family, peer and cultural support."
By providing a strong support network through the Carers Support Project, the Hibiscus Association are doing a tremendous job".
Notes to editors:
1. Cllr Akhtar is to speak at the Hibiscus Association's Carers Support Christmas Lunch on Thursday 22nd December at Jamaica House, 277 Chapeltown Road, Leeds LS7 3HA.
2. The Hibiscus Association is a not-for profit community organisation set up to support those of Caribbean descent who are primary carers and those who are being cared for; the elderly, infirm, adults with physical disabilities and debilitating illnesses.
