East End Park bonfire and fireworks display will be back next year. That's the news from local ward Councillor David Hollingsworth who has moved swiftly to quash any fears that the bonfire may be set for cancellation. This year's celebration was seen as a massive success by all concerned and a model for similar events across the city. Whilst the future of the bonfire was never in doubt, local residents had been concerned by a series of petitions that had appeared in local retail outlets calling for the event's reinstatement.
Councillor David Hollingsworth (Lib Dem, Burmantofts & Richmond Hill) said: "I'd like to go on record and assure local residents that the East End Park bonfire will definitely be back next year. Both my ward colleagues and I have been given personal assurances by Councillor Procter (Executive Board Member for Leisure Services) that the bonfire was never going to be cancelled. This latest bout of scare tactics is totally without foundation. These petitions were created to deliberately mislead local people into thinking the bonfire was under threat. The Guy Fawkes event held earlier this month was a huge success and a perfect example of what a community can do when it pulls together. Long may it continue."
