Lib Dem Councillor Kabeer Hussain (Hyde Park & Woodhouse) has voiced his concern at reports that people from ethnic groups are up to seven times more likely to be stopped and searched by West Yorkshire Police Officers than white people. Latest figures show that between April and September this year, out of a total of almost 64,000 cases, 20 per cent of all people stopped were from an ethnic minority.
Councillor Kabeer Hussain (Lib Dem, Hyde Park and Woodhouse) said "In a climate where the younger members of our communities feel increasingly disenfranchised these figures don't make happy reading. We must be careful to guard against heightening feelings of alienation and victimisation. With the Governments impending terror bill on the horizon it is perhaps now more essential than ever for the Police to maintain public confidence and an appearance of impartiality."
