Headingley Left in Limbo after Supertram Snub

November 3, 2005 1:46 PM

Headingley Councillors reacted with dismay at the news that Supertram has been ditched by the government.

Cllr Martin Hamilton (Lib Dem, Headingley) said, "The government wants the Council to put more emphasis on buses. At times, we have more buses than you can shake a stick at on the A660, but this alone has done nothing to solve our transport problems. The cost for any bus scheme would be equal to Supertram when you take into account the additional road space needed for such an undertaking."

Cllr David Morton (Lib Dem, Headingley) commented, "This now leaves Headingley residents without any prospect of addressing traffic problems on the A660 anytime soon. Otley Road and Headingley Lane is one of the top ten busiest stretches of highway in the country."

Cllr James Monaghan (Lib Dem, Headingley) added, "We are going to have to sit down and have a hard look at what we can do to salvage something from this. Some people have suggested retaining the park and ride proposal at Boddington as a way of removing some of the cars from the road. What is clear is that at this moment the government is saying no to Supertram without offering any hope for the future."

The views in this Press Release are those of the Liberal Democrat Council Group, and not necessarily those of Leeds City Council, its Officers or of the Liberal Democrat Party.
