South Gipton Community Centre is staying open. Council chiefs gave assurance of the reprieve at Friday's Executive Board meeting. Fears had been raised that local residents would be left without any community facilities should the centre be closed prior to the opening of the Gipton Arts Centre. However after consultation with concerned local Councillor Alan Taylor, the Council's cabinet decided to delay any closure until the much anticipated arts centre was up and running.
Cllr Alan Taylor (Lib Dem, Gipton and Harehills) said, "I am very relieved and grateful to the Executive Board for taking my concerns on board. Whilst we are all looking forward to the arrival of Gipton Arts Centre we had to ensure that we didn't jump the gun and leave local residents without community facilities for the intermittent period. This extension will ensure a sense of continuity for the local community."
