Despite the spate of bad news stories about falling literacy standards in the press this week Cllr Penny Ewens has been singing the praises of Leeds' readers, specifically a group of young bookworms who attend Burley Library on Cardigan Road (Hyde Park & Woodhouse). Cllr Ewens visited Burley Library as part of National Book week and witnessed children from as young as 6 months to five years taking part in a range of reading and literary activities. Library staff encourage the children's mothers to attend the fortnightly Rhyme Time sessions with their budding word-smiths in an initiative to get more adults back on the literary band wagon.
Cllr Ewens (Lib Dem Hyde Park & Woodhouse) said, " As a former teacher I was extremely disappointed to learn of OFSTED's claim that the reading levels of our young people are not improving in one out of three cases. However on visiting Burley Library I was most heartened by the Rhyme Time scheme that actively encourages children to enjoy reading from a pre school age. The level of dedication from the staff was remarkable as was the introductory 'book pack' on offer for all new members."
