Hyde Park bore witness to a huge show of community spirit this weekend when hundreds of people attended the Unity in the Community event at the Woodsley Road Multicultural Centre, LS3. Local Councillors Linda Rhodes-Clayton, Kabeer Hussain and Penny Ewens were on hand to witness a celebration of the continued sense of unity flourishing in the area. Residents from all cultural backgrounds turned up to send a clear message that this enclave of Leeds was not divided post 7/7. The event, funded by MICE money from the local Lib Dem Cllrs was organised by members of the community themselves.
Cllr Rhodes-Clayton (Lib Dem, Hyde Park & Woodhouse) said "The whole event was a huge success. The community came together to send out a clear statement that we are not and will not be divided by those wishing to spread messages of terror and division. I was hugely impressed by the amount of people who turned up to show their support and the diversity of activities on show."
Cllr Kabeer Hussain (Lib Dem, Hyde Park & Woodhouse) added "I really hope the media are taking note of what is happening here in Leeds. Hyde Park was inundated with journalists as soon as those shocking revelations of bomb factories in Alexandra Grove came to light. Local people felt besieged by the media. We have reacted with dignity and not let the actions of a few extremists undo the hard work we have all put in to make this area what it is."
Cllr Ewens (Lib Dem, Hyde Park & Woodhouse) commented "Representatives from Voluntary Action Leeds, Surestart, Groundwork Leeds, Leeds Voice, Connexions and Swarthmore were just some of the parties involved in the event. The event gave local people the chance to make new friends, join in new activities and find new opportunities for education and career development."
