Councillor Concern for Terror Bill

September 20, 2005 12:00 AM

Commenting on the publication of the draft Terrorism Bill, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Hyde Park and Woodhouse Kabeer Hussain said:

"While I support any constructive measures that seek to curb the threat of terrorism the Government must be careful not to create an atmosphere of fear and resentment that fosters the very radicalism we are trying so hard trying to eradicate."

"The local community here in Hyde Park & Woodhouse are trying and succeeding to restore some semblance of normality after the 7th July. The last thing anyone here wants is to further estrange disenfranchised members of our community through false accusations and scaremongering."

"Nobody is under any illusions as to the challenge we face here in Leeds after the London Bombings but to inflict such draconian measures on a community already under the spotlight could serve to alienate the very people it is trying to protect."

The views in this Press Release are those of the Liberal Democrat Council Group and not necessarily those of Leeds City Council, its Officers or of the Liberal Democrat Party.
