Holiday Makeover For Weet - Wood

September 1, 2005 12:00 AM

woodlandResidents in Ireland Wood got their hands dirty this summer following a clean up operation the organisers of Leeds Festival would be proud of. Residents of the Iveson's*, fed up with rubbish being dumped in their neighbourhood sprang into action after deciding to tackle their burgeoning litter problem head on. Armed with their own tools, a donated wheelbarrow and a skip provided by the Inner North West Area Committee, residents joined local Weetwood Councillor Sue Bentley to clean up Clayton Woods and the surrounding areas.

Councillor Sue Bentley (Lib Dem,Weetwood) said: "There was a good turn out of residents including several young people as young as five years. The youngsters could not believe the amount of rubbish we found ranging from mattresses, microwaves to kettles - in fact they said 'we could have set up home'! Despite the hard work we had lots of fun."

She added: "Within two hours of clearing up the area more rubbish was dumped. This turned out to be trade waste and hazardous which costs council tax payers a lot of money to dispose of properly. Dumping or fly tipping is illegal. There is no need to dump household rubbish as Leeds City Council will collect large items with the green bin collection. If in doubt please ring 0113 398 4760."
