Plans for East Leeds Park Outlined

August 17, 2005 12:00 AM

Local Lib Dem Cllrs David Hollingsworth, Richard Brett and Ralph Pryke have hailed the success of a meeting held by local steering group, the Friends of East End Park. Well attended by both members of the group and a number of enthusiastic local residents, the meeting was set up to discuss how best to use the funds allocated to the park by Leeds City Council's capital budget programme. Fred Duff , senior Area Parks Manager, talked in detail about a wide range of potential improvements for the Park. The result of the consultation was an agreement that the revised budget of £75,000 (to be used before 31 March 2006) should be spent on the items outlined by Mr Duff*.

Cllr David Hollingsworth (Lib Dem, Burmantofts & Richmond Hill) said "It was an exciting meeting with a good range of ideas for the future. It is important that security is improved first because we want to encourage more people to use the Park".

Cllr Richard Brett (Lib Dem, Burmantofts & Richmond Hill) commented "We are planning to formally launch the new Friends of East End Park group at a public meeting on Tuesday 11th October at 7.30pm. The venue still has to be arranged, but this meeting should agree the aims of the group, elect Officers, a committee and then start to plan a programme of events in the Park for 2006."

Cllr Ralph Pryke(Lib Dem, Burmantofts & Richmond Hill) added "Once a Friends group has been formed it will allow us to apply for money from Trusts and Special Funds which the Council can't do. We hope this will be the start of the transformation of East End Park."

Notes to the Editor

*The action will include:-

• Putting "A frame" barriers at each entrance to stop motor cyclists getting on to the Park.

• Adding about 10 vandal proof metal park benches in sites which are still to be agreed

• Adding about a dozen new litter bins

• Planting 5000 daffodil bulbs along a stretch near East Park Parade

• Putting a "teen zone" hut near the basketball pitch

• Erecting new metal perimeter railings from Ings Crescent to Victoria Avenue.

• Re - siting and improving the two football pitches.

The meeting hoped all of this work could be done before March 2006 using the existing budget.
