The Liberal Democrats had a resounding victory in the Headingley by-election last night. James Monaghan received over 58% of the vote. Labour got less than 28% and the Conservatives came fourth behind the Greens.
Headingley's newest councillor, James Monaghan, said, "I am looking forward to the challenges of representing our community in Headingley. People have said that we only win in Headingley because of the student vote. This result reflects our long-standing commitment to working to secure a sustainable future for everyone who lives in the area."
When the result came in James said, "Labour worked really hard to take the seat back from us. I am delighted that people saw through their negative campaign. They failed to show any serious intention to get things done for people in Headingley."
"I want to thank everyone who came out and voted for me on such a rainy day. And I am very excited that local residents have placed their trust in me. I look forward to work for them, carrying on the work of Greg Mulholland, alongside Cllr David Morton and Cllr Martin Hamilton."
Cllr Mark Harris, the leader of Leeds City Council, said "This is a clear vote of confidence in the new administration. The people sent Labour a clear message of rejection, and gave James Monaghan their full support. With over 58% of the vote, it was one of our best results ever. I look forward to working with James Monaghan in the coming years."
Final Result:
Liberal Democrats: 903 (58.3%)
Labour: 433 (27.9%)
Green: 100 (6.5%)
