Gipton and Harehills Councillor Javaid Akhtar has taken it upon himself to embark on a whistle stop tour of Leeds' religious centres in a bid to promote a message of unity amongst the city's diverse communities. In the wake of the recent atrocity in the capital and the events unfolding in Leeds' very own inner city suburbs of Burley and Beeston, Cllr Akhtar has seized the initiative and decided to hit the streets. Starting at 1pm today (15/07/05) Cllr Akhtar's first stop will be the Hal Hassan Mosque, Leeds 8.
Cllr Javaid Akhtar (Lib Dem, Gipton and Harehills) said, "As a practising Muslim I was shocked and appalled at last week's cowardly attack in London. I feel very strongly that the Muslim community and the rest of Leeds' diverse population must pull together during this difficult period. We must stand shoulder to shoulder in this time of great anxiety and show the rest of the UK and the watching world that Leeds is united."
• Cllr Akhtar has today visited the Hal Hassan Mosque and the Islamic Centre in Harehills.
• On Sunday he is to visit a Sikh temple (1pm) and will attend a Sunday Service at St Agnes Church (Burmantofts)
