Liberal Democrat Cllrs Alan Taylor and Javaid Akhtar (Gipton and Harehills) are thrilled that the Government has given approval for the Council to build a new £1.3m Children's Centre on Compton Road in Harehills.
Councillor Taylor said "It is excellent news for one of the most deprived areas in the city. Nearly two-thirds of the children in the area live in families receiving benefits and unemployment is high, so this is very welcome scheme that will help to close the gap between this area and the rest of the city. This is exactly the kind of project we need in Harehills."
Councillor Akhtar added "The new Centre will provide a whole range of services such as early education, family support, health, social services, training and perhaps most important of all - affordable childcare. A lot of parents in the area are unable to get jobs or access the training courses available at Thomas Danby College and elsewhere because they can't afford childcare. The Children's Centre will provide this."
