Local Lib Dem Cllr Penny Ewens, found a hive of activity on a recent visit (17th May 2005) to Rosebank Primary School, Burley. Cllr Ewens was given a presentation by pupils on local road safety issues and a chance to join in with Rosebank Primary's very own School Council. The road safety presentation saw pupils from Year 5 using display posters and photographs to illustrate the dangers posed by traffic on the nearby Burley Road.
Cllr Ewens (Lib Dem Hyde Park & Woodhouse) said, "This is an excellent example of the idea of civic responsibility being introduced to children, encouraging them to be aware of their surroundings and the needs of other people. The children have all written letters which I will deliver to the Highways department for them along with a letter of my own.
I have promised to take up the urgent need for a safe crossing on this stretch of Burley Road, supporting the work the children have done to promote the cause" The presentation was followed by a School Council meeting during the lunch hour where representatives from years 3 and 4 raised and discussed topical issues such as classroom sizes and school dinner menus.
Cllr Ewens added "We cannot start too early letting children learn in a practical way of the values of democracy and the need to consider everybody's views."
