Leeds city council has shown its commitment to supporting active lifestyles for Leeds citizens with a multi-million pound investment programme in recreation facilities in the next year.
Speaking at the meeting of full council today (13th April), Cllr. Javaid Akhtar praised the new administration for its decision to invest in the health of Leeds residents by spending £4.7 million in the next year on sport and recreation projects throughout the city.
Among the projects the money will be spent on are:
£1.4 million to improve Oxton Way and Tinshill sports pitches for use by local schools
£500k to improve community safety in parks and countryside areas
£500k for parks neck and arm vibration machines
£200k for improvements to Stonegate Road sports pitches
£106k for the restoration of Roundhay Park
Cllr Javaid Akhtar said: "The health and fitness of the public and particularly of children is an issue of ever increasing importance for policy makers at all levels. It is more important than ever that an organisation such as Leeds City Council should do all it can to ensure that the city's citizens can pursue an active lifestyle through outdoor recreation and participation in sport.
"It is with this in mind that the executive should be congratulated on its decision to devote £4.7 million capital funding for recreation projects throughout Leeds.
"The new administration can be rightly proud that, despite the previous administration's claims to the contrary, it is investing to improve services in Leeds and particularly in those areas where it is needed most."
