New Beat For The Street

March 21, 2005 10:22 PM

Local Lib Dem Councillor Steve Smith, has hailed the impact the two Police Community Support Officers have had in his ward since their introduction some 11 months ago. PCSO Jonny Smith and PCSO Simon Ashmore came into post in Rothwell on 24th April 2004.

The success of the pair has prompted Leeds City Council's Executive Board to agree to add to their number in the coming months as part of an initiative to increase PCSOs across the city. Since their introduction the PCSOs have been involved in the detention and arrest of criminals in Rothwell town centre, the setting up of the 'Shop Watch' initiative to help local traders combat crime and have assisted the CID with the detection of motor vehicle theft in the area. PCSO Smith and Ashmore's patrol encompasses Rothwell, John O'Gaunts, Methley, Carlton, Woodlesford, Lofthouse, Ouzlewell Green.

Councillor Smith (Lib Dem,Rothwell) said, "Police Community Support Officers provide a vital role supporting the Police and helping protect the local community. These additional resources have been very welcome. PCSO's provide much needed reassurance for local residents who want to feel safe in their homes and communities. I have been particularly impressed by the links PSCO Smith and Ashmore have forged with Rothwell's business and retail sector."
