CCTV Boost For East Leeds

March 8, 2005 1:23 AM

Local Lib Dem Councillors have welcomed the installation of 14 crime busting CCTV camera's in the Cross Green, East End Park and Burmantofts areas of East Leeds. Recent Crime statistics had revealed that in 2004 in East End Park alone some 1275 recorded offences had taken place. Ward Cllrs David Hollingsworth, Ralph Pryke and Richard Brett along with Leeds Community Safety Officers listened to the concerns of local residents and decided to push ahead with the scheme.

Councillor David Hollingsworth (Lib Dem, Burmantofts and Richmond Hill)

said: "This is a massive boost for the local community in our fight against crime. CCTV cameras act as the eyes and ears of the police and as a deterrent for potential offenders."

Councillor Pryke (Lib Dem, Burmantofts and Richmond Hill) commented: "As local ward Councillors we have listened to the concerns of local residents.

The introduction of the additional CCTV cameras will support the work of the Police and Neighbourhood Wardens already operating in the area."

Councillor Brett added (Lib Dem, Burmantofts and Richmond Hill) added:

"Making use of new technologies such as CCTV is a must if we are to tackle crime effectively."

The cameras have now been installed in East End Park, Cross Green and Burmantofts to help improve security for residents and reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.

· There are 10 cameras in East End Park and Cross Green. There are a

further 4 on the other side of York Road in the Burmantofts area.

· The cameras in East End Park cover the Glensdales, Templeviews ,

Charltons and East Parks.

· During 2004, there were 1275 recorded offences in East End Park,

including: 93 domestic burglaries; 364 cases of criminal damage; 245 violent crimes; 113 cases of theft from a vehicle; 127 cases of theft of a vehicle and; 36 robberies.

· The £225,000 for the original ten cameras has been provided by Leeds

Community Safety, with a further contribution of £100,000 coming from the Single Regeneration Budget which allowed for a further four cameras to be installed in the area. The East Inner Area Committee have agreed to fund the additional revenue for the four additional cameras.
