Headingley Liberal Democrat Councillors, Greg Mulholland and Martin Hamilton have welcomed an Area Committee funded project that will see Headingley gain a significantly increased Police provision to cope with the demands of the area's drinking establishments. Operation Alniviouth will see an increase in the number of PC's and PCSOs (Community Support
Officers) in the area between the busiest times of 2000hrs and 0200hrs on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Councillor Greg Mulholland (Lib Dem, Headingley) said "This is great news for the local community. A strong and effective Police presence is vital for public confidence in law and order. The Area Committee has listened to the concerns of the local community and responded in a positive fashion."
Councillor Martin Hamilton (Lib Dem, Headingley) who is North West (Inner) Area Committee Chair added "Operation Alniviouth main aim is to reduce anti social behaviour, violent crime and criminal damage that can arise after a minority of people have too much to drink. A strong uniformed presence will also help make the area feel safer for residents. I wish the scheme every success"
Police Officers will also report back on any incidents, so that this can be used as examples which will provide further justification for the Council's new policy to restrict further bar developments in Headingley.
