Cllr Sue Bentley opened the Connexions Access Point in the Tinshill Learning Centre, Woodnook Drive, and paid tribute to the hard work that the enthusiastic staff had put into this exciting project. Funded by Connexions West Yorkshire, this is the first Access Point to be set in a Learning Centre in the whole of West Yorkshire. It will provide young people with impartial information, advice and guidance not only about careers but life skills helping them to make informed choices. The event was well attended by representatives from Connexions, Igen, Education Leeds, Barnardo's and members of staff who will all be involved in manning the Access Point.
Cllr Sue Bentley (Lib Dem, Weetwood Ward) said: "This is a wonderful addition for the Tinshill Learning Centre and its students. Eventually it is hoped to offer these services to all the young people in the area.
Everyone involved in this project is committed to the principle that the young people in this area achieve their potential, enjoy some of the prosperity of the city and that no-one is left behind. "
The Access Point was made possible due to the support of Connexions, Barnardos, Igen, the NHS, the Youth Service, Base 10 and the Drug Action Team.
The Access Point is to be initially for the students at the Learning Centre but eventually it is hoped that the facility will be opened up to every young person in the area.
The centre will be open daily during the week with various organisations offering different types of services for the students. These will include advice on housing, pregnancy and drugs as well as giving the students the opportunity to look after a virtual baby.
