"To Let Hearing Could See An End To Unsightly Boards"

February 9, 2005 7:24 PM
  • If It's Good Enough For Celebrity Michael Winner Its Good Enough For Headingley Residents

Councillor Martin Hamilton (Lib Dem, Headingley Ward) says that celebrity Michael Winner does not have to put up with forests of To Let Boards where he lives, so why should Headingley residents! Next Wednesday sees a public hearing into the proposed ban on To Let signs in North West Leeds. If the Government Inspector reacts positively to the proposals areas of Headingley, Burley, Hyde Park and Woodhouse could benefit.

Cllr Martin Hamilton (Lib Dem, Headingley), who chairs the North West

Inner Area Committee who are backing the scheme and who will be speaking at the hearing says "To Let signs are not only offensive to the eye but they highlight shared properties with expensive items to steal. With 40+ letting agents plus numerous opportunities to advertise in local newspapers, they are simply no longer justified."

Local Councillor Greg Mulholland (Lib Dem Headingley) says "We very much hope that the Inspector responds positively to our representations at the hearing. This is an issue that effects residents, both locals and students alike. The whole community is behind this."

Cllr Hamilton added "To Let signs are already banned in parts of Loughborough and in Kensington and Chelsea. If it's good enough for Holland Park resident Michael Winner, its good

enough for Headingley residents."

The recent submission to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister marks the culmination of efforts by Headingley Councillors to bring the matter to a head after a failed attempt at a ban more than two years ago. A voluntary scheme, recently resuscitated by local landlords to coincide with the submission of the To Let Ban proposal, proved ineffective.
