Cllr Mark Harris has reacted angrily to the fact that Leeds has once again missed out on Government funding to improve health services in inner city areas.
Liberal Democrat Council Group Leader Cllr Mark Harris said "Predictably Central Government has let down the people of Leeds again. I'm stunned by the lack of understanding shown by Mr Reid and his colleagues at the problems facing residents in our most deprived wards. The issue of health is more than ever at the forefront of people's mind in the city. This snub cannot be justified. The people of Leeds deserve an explanation as to why they've been short changed once again."
Notes to the Editor:
Today Government Health Secretary John Reid announced that a £135 billion investment in the NHS will be allocated to English Primary Care Trusts over the next two years. The cash boost is designed to tackle "big killer diseases" like cancer and heart disease by improving access to services, slashing waiting times and putting greater emphasis on prevention as a cure. The funding is to be divided amongst nation's PCT's with a greater provision for the 88 pilot schemes as announced by Mr Reid last November. Those areas deemed most in need by Mr Reid are to receive over 15% of the boost. Leeds, with many inner-city wards ranked in the worst in the country, has again missed out. Only one of Leeds five PCT's have received more than the bare minimum investment of 8.1%. Leeds North West PCT is to receive 8.9%.
