Cllr Penny Ewens has taken up the cause of the residents Little London's Carlton Croft after health and safety fears prompted her into action. Cllr Ewens was presented with a petition signed by many of the sheltered accommodation's elderly inhabitants expressing concerns that the lifts were in an hazardous state. Cllr Ewens took the matter to the Council's Scrutiny Board after inspecting the lifts for herself, insisting that the problem be looked at and action taken. As a result grab rails have now been installed with the prospect of a overhaul of all the Carlton tower block lifts later this year.
Councillor Penny Ewens (Lib Dem, Hyde Park & Woodhouse) said, " People are delighted with the introduction of the grab rails. They feel safer and are relieved that this problem is now being dealt with . Money is now being found to improve the lifts further both at Carlton Croft as well as Carlton Garth and Carlton Close. Those residents will be consulted to find out exactly what is needed."
