Figures published this week (19th Jan 2005) show how a mere 10% of young people in Leeds Central go on to University while 42% from Leeds North West are successful.
Cllr Martin Hamilton (Lib Dem Headingley), Chair of the Council's Inner
North West Area Committee said : "These statistics are yet another potent example of the two speed economy that has been prevalent in Leeds for too long. In Leeds Central Constituency, part of which comes under the remit of Inner North West Area Committee, figures are in stark contrast to those residents who live a less than mile or two away. Areas such as Woodhouse, Little London and Lincoln Green have only 10% of its young people going on to University in comparison to their near neighbours in Headingley that has 42%. There cannot be a more obvious illustration of the current division there is amongst the communities in Leeds.
"Education is pivotal to the future of our local communities and I would hope to see many more young people aspire to go on to University.
Unfortunately Government plans to increase tuition fees and reduce grants mean that more and more young people are put off by the financial pressures and burdens they will face. Government needs to address the inequalities in the system which mean that fewer young people aspire to go on to University in our area than elsewhere in Leeds, not deter our young people by pricing education out of their reach."
Note
