Cllr Javaid Akhtar (Lib Dem, Gipton & Harehills) is urging the people of Leeds to do all they can to help those affected by the Asian earthquake disaster.
Councillor Akhtar said "This terrible disaster has horrified us all, and of course the people of Leeds feel tremendous sympathy for those affected. The best way for us to reflect this concern is to offer whatever practical and financial help we can for the aid effort."
"I've offered my assistance to the Leader and Chief Executive of the Council, and to Cllr Mark Harris the Lib Dem Group Leader, in finding ways to encourage local communities to help the cause."
"I publicly salute the British people for their generous support in raising about £20m so far, but of course much more is still needed. I'm delighted with the response from Cllrs Andrew Carter and Mark Harris when I asked them to look into ways that Leeds can assist the aid effort. I personally will be involved in raising awareness of the consequences of this disaster during the weeks and months to come."
