Liberal Democrat Cllr Alan Taylor (Gipton and Harehills) welcomes measures announced in the Queen's Speech last week to tackle drug dealing near schools, but points out that Leeds children are at risk in many places, not just at school.
Councillor Taylor (Lib Dem) said "Liberal Democrats have long argued that dealing outside schools should lead to longer sentences and I welcome this move. The trouble is, drug dealers prey on young and vulnerable people elsewhere as well. For a start, the Government needs to look at tougher sentences for dealers caught operating near playgrounds and parks also."
"If the Government is genuinely keen on protecting youngsters from drugs, then the law needs to be toughened up to deter dealers from offering drugs anywhere where children congregate - not just at school. In my own ward of Gipton and Harehills, drug dealers prey on youngsters in Banstead Park and Ashton Road play area. What makes selling drugs to children there any less serious a crime than outside school?"
