Liberal Democrat Councillors David Morton (Executive Board Member for City Services) and Ryk Downes (Lead Member responsible for Environmental Enforcement) were present at today's launch of the Leeds City Council's policy to stop illegal flyposting.
Cllr Morton (Lib Dem, Headingley) said "Illegal flyposting can give out a signal that an area is not cared for, which can act as a magnet to criminals and make it hard to attract people to come and live or set up business there. That's why it's vital that we get tough with the handful of people who commit this offence."
"We provide dozens of official drums and boards across the city centre where promoters can advertise events legally at a very low cost, so there's no excuse for plastering stickers and posters elsewhere. More and more drums are planned outside the City centre, so that we can tackle the problem in places like Burley Road, Chapeltown and Harehills as well."
Cllr Ryk Downes (Lib Dem, Otley and Yeadon) added "The tiny minority of people who continue to flypost illegally will be prosecuted if necessary. This could mean fines of up to £1000 and Anti-Social Behaviour Orders for persistent offenders. Offences could also be taken into consideration when pubs or clubs make licensing applications in future".
