Plans for a new £1.3m children's centre, mean that an additional 30 childcare places will be available for Harehills
Today Leeds City Council's Executive Board approved a report on the Harehills Integrated Children's Centre, so that car will be provide for a total of 80. The funding is made up from the Harehills Sure Start programme which will provide £300k and a further £1m of government cash.
The new building will also provide a training room, office space and family rooms. Priority for childcare places will be given to local parents.
Cllr Richard Harker, executive member for Learning, said:
"This is a wonderful facility for the local community. It will be a real family resource and will help us keep pace with the increasing demand for support services as parents try to get back into work.
"We want to make sure that everyone has access to decent quality training and childcare to enable them to make the most of job opportunities."
It is anticipated that this could lead to an integrated centre encompassing many facilities on the one site providing childcare, health, social services and training.
Leeds City Council has ambitious plans to go beyond the Government's targets for integrated children's centres in deprived areas with 21 planned for Leeds by the Spring of 2006.
