Councillors have been told that an early solution is unlikely to be found to the dispute which led to unofficial industrial action by refuse collectors this week. Cllr Martin Hamilton, Liberal Democrat spokesperson for City Services, wants to know why one of the Council's key policy initiatives has been so badly handled…
Cllr Hamilton (Lib Dem, Headingley) said "Streetscene has been heavily promoted as the Council's major initiative to improve the local environment. A vital part of Streetscene was supposed to be the re-organisation of refuse collection rounds, which has so far been a disaster. What are the people of Leeds supposed to think when they can't even rely on the Council to collect their bins on the right day?"
"The Council has been telling all and sundry about the supposed improvements to the refuse collection service that were supposed to start this week. Now, following industrial action on Monday and Tuesday, residents are being told to put their bins out on the old collection day. A letter has been sent to all Councillors today warning us not to expect any change until July while the Council's City Services Department works with the trade unions to find an acceptable solution. How on earth is it that agreement wasn't reached with the Unions beforehand?"
