The Case of the Faulty Fountains

March 23, 2004 8:13 PM

After three years the Fountains on Millennium Square are still unreliable, and the City Square Fountains are no better

Councillor Brian Cleasby, (Lib Dem, Horsforth) will be challenging the Labour Leadership on Leeds City Council this week to explain why neither of the Fountains they have installed in Millennium Square and City Square ever seem to be working properly.

Cllr Cleasby said "The whole saga of Millennium Square has been one of poor design and wasted money. Now it looks as if City Square is heading the same way. One of the main features at both squares is a landmark Fountain, but neither ever seem to be working properly. Last week the fountain at Millennium Square was only half working, while every time we checked on City Square the fountains there weren't working at all. Either they were badly designed and are unable to cope with a mild winter, or they're just not up to the standards we should have demanded in the contracts.

"All in all those members of Council who are forever boasting about the great success of Millennium Square should really think hard about whether they got value for money from their £15 million investment."
