Leeds Deserves Cleaner Streets and Pavements

Lib Dems call for additional spending on keeping streets clean across the City ……………..

At this Wednesday's Budget Meeting of Leeds City Council Cllr Mark Harris, Leader of the Opposition Liberal Democrat Group on Leeds City Council will call for additional spending of over a million pounds on keeping the streets clean across the City.

Cllr Harris said "As the Tidy Britain Survey published on Monday showed, the Country as a whole has a long way to go before we can be seen to have successfully tackled the piles of rubbish which build up in our City Centres and other areas. Here in Leeds the efforts which have made in some key areas such as Headingley over the last year have shown that major improvements can be made to the way in which the Council tackles litter and other rubbish which blights our community. But this work cannot be done on the cheap. The odd visit by a hit squad to an area is all very well, but we shouldn't wait to let rubbish gather. In the City Centre cleaning machines often fail to tackle rubbish effectively, indeed sometimes all they seem to do is gather dirt and rubbish into a straight line.

"Local people deserve to have streets cleaned and tidied on a regular basis, wherever they live. That is why one of our key proposals for this years budget is to spend an additional £1.2 million on the 'Streetscene' schemes and an additional £223 thousand on anti-graffiti measures.

"This additional funding will enable effective measures to be taken, rather than trying to improve services on the cheap. There are plenty of areas where the Council can, and should, cut costs - keeping the City clean and tidy is not one of them."
