Leeds Needs an Arena!

November 4, 2003 12:00 AM

Today the Liberal Democrats on Leeds City Council will force Labour to debate giving the city a quality facility that it deserves….

Leeds is the regional capital of the Yorkshire region, some say even Capital of the North. Cllr David Morton (Lib Dem, Headingley) commented; "The fact that a city of our size has neither a decent conference centre or a major music arena is ridiculous. The controlling Labour Group has squandered tens of millions of pounds on the city centre but seems to have something against live music."

Cllr Morton said "The fact that people have to go to Manchester to see the best live acts can't be right. It's all income that could be going into the Leeds economy rather than a regional rival, setting aside all the travel time. Leeds Labour are trying to spin that they are already looking at this issue. Their working party on cultural facilities could take years to report and will cover lots of topics. The Liberal Democrat group have arranged a debate at today's full council meeting where we will challenge Labour to stop dawdling and set up a top ranking group to get the ball rolling on the project."
